Retiring in Mauritius: Why More Europeans Are Choosing the Island

Mauritius is quietly becoming one of Europe’s favourite retirement destinations. Swiss, German, French, and British retirees are choosing the island not just for its climate and lifestyle, but for its tax environment, political stability, and the quality of life it offers at a fraction of what equivalent living costs in Western Europe.

This guide covers everything a European retiree needs to know about retiring to Mauritius in 2026.

Why Mauritius for Retirement?

  • No capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, no wealth tax
  • Flat income tax of 15% on Mauritius-sourced income
  • Pension income from abroad: often taxed only in the country of origin under double tax treaties — consult a tax advisor for your specific situation
  • Warm climate year-round with lower rainfall on the west coast
  • English and French spoken widely
  • Direct flights to Zurich, Paris, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam
  • Lower cost of living than Switzerland, UK, or France
  • Good private healthcare

Residency Options for Retirees

Retired Non-Citizen Permit

This permit is specifically designed for retirees. Requirements:

  • Aged 50 or above
  • Transfer a minimum of USD 1,500 per month (or USD 18,000 per year) into a Mauritian bank account
  • Proof of pension, savings, or other regular income
  • Valid passport and clean record

The permit is renewable and does not require purchasing property.

Residency Through Property Purchase

Purchase of a qualifying property under the PDS, IRS, IHS, RES, or SCS scheme at USD 375,000 or above grants a residency permit valid for as long as you hold the property. This is the most popular route for retirees who want to own their home outright.

Premium Visa

A lighter-touch option: live in Mauritius for up to one year on a renewable basis without purchasing property. No minimum age requirement. Suitable for those still deciding whether Mauritius is right for them long-term.

What Does Retirement Life Look Like?

The west coast — around Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin, and La Preneuse — is the preferred area for European retirees who want calmer waters, reliable sunshine, and a slower pace. The north (Grand Baie, Pereybere) is livelier and more cosmopolitan. The east (Belle Mare, Palmar) is quieter and strikingly beautiful.

Golf, sailing, diving, yoga, tennis — active retirement is very well served. The international community is well-established and welcoming. Many European retirees describe Mauritius as offering the lifestyle they imagined in their 40s but couldn’t access until they left.

Healthcare for Retirees

Private healthcare in Mauritius — primarily through Wellkin Hospital, C-Care clinics, and City Clinic — covers most routine and specialist needs. For cardiac, oncological, or highly complex procedures, South Africa or Europe is the typical fallback.

International health insurance is strongly recommended. Good policies covering Mauritius and international evacuation start from around EUR 2,000–4,000 per year for retirees depending on age.

Property for Retirement

Most retirees buying property in Mauritius look for villas or large apartments with garden or sea views, low maintenance, and proximity to services. The sweet spot in 2026 is between USD 400,000 and USD 900,000 — where you find well-maintained properties in established gated estates with pools, 24-hour security, and concierge services.

From July 2026, registration duty for non-citizens is 10% of the purchase price. Budget for this from the start.

Swiss Retirees: A Special Note

Mauritius and Switzerland have a double tax treaty. Swiss pension income paid by Swiss pension funds (pillar 2) may still be taxed in Switzerland, while private savings income may be eligible for more favourable treatment in Mauritius. This is an area where proper tax structuring is essential. LIVERIA works with Swiss-qualified tax advisors who understand both systems.
